| The beginning of Conamore Basenjis was the direct result of seeing the movie Good Bye My Lady. As a young person, the movie, particularly the dog, fascinated me. At the time I had Samoyeds, which I loved dearly, however, the basenji, was certainly a challenge. This was about 1960. In 1962 I purchased my first basenji, with a broken toe, and a missing tooth, the challenge began. From there I purchased Ch.Spearwood Tirzah from Spearwood Kennels in San.Antonio ,Texas. Tirzah was strongly linebred whose lines were direct to Glengary Sun Dancer and many Merlea basenjis, (Margaret Robertson). Tirzah was the first basenji to go best in show in Canada in a span on 15 years. We then purchased Spearwood Quess't of Bushongo, and 'Thurder' was bred to Tirzah and produced Ch. Conamore's Follow T'Sun. Sun Sun was owned by Kaduna Kennels and was a dog before his time. Sun Sun accumulated an amazing No. 5,and 6 respectively in the top ten hounds in the early 70's. Sadly, Sun Sun was never used at stud, due to unfortunate agreements with his owners. We also had Conamore's Sun Chantza, who was the dam of Am.Can.Ch.Conamore's Sun and Jasmine. Jasmine was BOB at the 1989 BCOA National, as well as having 6 all breed BIS wins to her credit. Jasmine produced Ch. Conamore's Sun of Simba, Spud, who held the record of No.l basenji for a period of time, as well as having 10 all breed BIS awards to his credit. Spud's litter sister, Ch. Conamore's Sun Chloe, was bred to Am.Ch. Changa's Dan Patch, and produced Ch. Conamore's Marbled Maya, who herself had both majors in the US, but we did not finish her, due to so many personal commitments. Maya's Sun, Ch.Conamore's Sun Riser, and daughter Ch.Conamore's Sun Gizza, are beautiful linebred basenjis, possessing qualities passed to them over the generations. They are our hopefuls on a limited breeding program. | Basenji philosophy is relatively simple, maintain breed essence, and
healthy dogs.
There are essentials that make a basenji a basenji, wrinkled forehead, small ears, short back, pliant coat, correct color. The basenji is anatomically a beautiful little African dog, primitive in nature and designed for survival. Over the decades the basenji has struggled to maintain its existence in the North American dog world. The hound group was not prepared for a primitive hunting dog, dual sight/scent. As well as being swift and agile. The judges were not prepared to judge a dog of such primitive nature. And the breeders themselves were not prepared for the intelligence, and instinct of survival. Along with the breed came diseases of grave importance. So with philosophy, is to attempt to breed healthy dogs, of sound mind and body. To maintain breed type and ensure the 'essence of the breed' and to educate the dog public as to a truly worthy breed.
